Job Announcement: Montana Dinosaur Trail Coordinator (Contract Position)

The Carter County Museum (CCM), on behalf of the Montana Dinosaur Trail, is seeking a Montana Dinosaur Trail Coordinator.

This contract position offers a unique opportunity for an individual to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Montana Dinosaur Trail, including developing a tourism marketing strategy with our regional partners, coordinating with Trail partners on projects, and working closely with the Montana Dinosaur Trail Grant Advisory Committee and the Foundation for Montana History on the execution of the Montana Dinosaur Trail Tourism Development Grant.

  • Title: Montana Dinosaur Trail Coordinator
  • Status: Contract $3,750/month, $45,000 annual
  • Reports to: Dr. Sabre Moore, Chair, MTDG Advisory Committee
  • Location: Ekalaka, Montana OR Remote (preference to Montana-based candidates)
  • Start Date: June 2026

Background

The Montana Dinosaur Trail is a Paleontology/Community Tourism Promotion Project created over 20 years ago involving more than 20 Partners. Its focus is on promoting visitation to and the development and retention of Montana’s paleontology story and paleontology-focused facilities found in Central and Eastern Montana. The Trail currently consists of 15 facilities in 13 communities. Trail facilities are promoted and supported in their efforts by 4 of the State’s seven Tourism Regions, the Montana Department of Commerce Tourism Program, Montana State Parks, the Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Trail is not a formal non-profit organization itself, but its participating Partners are either non-profits or government agencies. The Trail is a 2026 recipient of the Montana Department of Commerce’s Tourism Development Grant -- a multi-year funding commitment of $1.25 million for 2 years (2026-2027) with the potential for another $1.5 million over the following 3 years (2028-2030) with satisfactory performance.

Qualifications
  • B.A. in Marketing/Communications/Destination or Tourism Management, Museums, OR at least four years of relevant work in tourism, marketing, museum, or project management field .
  • Valid driver’s license required  
  • Ability to lift and carry 40+ lbs., work outdoors in varied conditions, and perform detailed manual tasks 
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to engage with diverse audiences. Proficiency with Google Docs, Google Sheets, and collections management software (or willingness to learn) 
Compensation and Benefits
  • Remote/Contract work salaried at $3,750/mo
  • Work schedule corresponds with the needs of Trail Projects, Partners and Grant Operations.
  • Travel (mileage, etc.), payroll, tax withholding, etc. the responsibility of the employee

Note: If located in Ekalaka, the employee will have the opportunity to work on-site at the Carter County Museum and have the use of museum vehicles for project-related travel.

Volunteer and Internship Opportunities

The CCM offers seasonal internships and volunteer opportunities with our field crew, fossil preparation team, and museum collections. Examples of past projects include designing American Indian exhibit displays and establishing a native species garden.

Virtual internships with the CCM are offered year round and provide an opportunity to gain museum experience through remote work. Examples of past projects include designing virtual exhibitions, creating digital curation policies, and historical research.
