Paleontology Field & Lab Manager

The Carter County Museum (CCM), the oldest dinosaur museum and the first county museum in Montana, is seeking a part-time Paleontology Field & Lab Manager. Located in Ekalaka, Montana, CCM is a repository for paleontological material from federal lands and Medicine Rocks State Park and a nonprofit dedicated to preservation, research, and education in paleontology, history, and science.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work with fossils both in the field and in the lab, contribute to internationally recognized educational programs, and support the museum’s mission of advancing paleontological discovery and public engagement.

Position Details
  • Title: Paleontology Field & Lab Manager
  • Status: Part-time, 32 hours/week
  • Pay: $20/hour
  • Location: Ekalaka, Montana
  • Start Date: On or before December 1, 2025
  • Application Deadline: November 2, 2025
Key Responsibilities
  • Organize and assist with fossil fieldwork on public and private lands.
  • Manage logistics and training for field expeditions, including CCM’s annual Dino Shindig and Clades & Spades camp.
  • Supervise daily fossil preparation lab operations and maintain safety protocols.
  • Train and oversee staff, students, and volunteers in fossil preparation and conservation.
  • Maintain accurate collections records and support researcher access.
  • Prepare and conserve fossil specimens for study, storage, and exhibit.
  • Engage with visitors, students, and the public through lab tours, field schools, outreach programs, and educational events.
Qualifications
  • B.S. in Biology, Geology, Paleontology, Earth Sciences, or related field OR at least four years of relevant paleontology lab/museum experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Physical ability to lift 40+ lbs., work outdoors in varied conditions, and perform detailed manual preparation tasks.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; ability to engage with the public, researchers, and volunteers.
  • Proficiency with Google Docs/Sheets and collections management software (or willingness to learn).
  • Interest in supporting education, outreach, and social media content.

Volunteer and Internship Opportunities

The CCM offers seasonal internships and volunteer opportunities with our field crew, fossil preparation team, and museum collections. Examples of past projects include designing American Indian exhibit displays and establishing a native species garden.

Virtual internships with the CCM are offered year round and provide an opportunity to gain museum experience through remote work. Examples of past projects include designing virtual exhibitions, creating digital curation policies, and historical research.
