Roosevelt County - Model Geologic Time
Background Info/ Historical Story:
"Through the countless ages of geologic time that followed the early mountain making convulsions of nature, when percolating waters carried from unreachable depths in the interior of the earth their burden of
precious metals and deposited them in the fissures broken through the cooling surface, the gold, silver, copper, zinc and lead content remained, unsaleable and valueless, awaiting the pick and shovel of the miner who, forging ahead of advancing civilization, eagerly sought to find the first primary values hidden in the recesses of the rocks.” The Searchlight, Culbertson, Montana • Fri, Sep 8, 1922
“Flaxville Formation-The Flaxville Formation is likely a deposit of the ancestral Missouri River when it flowed northeast in a broad valley towards Canada. It is composed of sand, silt, clay, volcanic ash and gravel. Abundant fossils from the Pliocene age including bones from hipparion, procamelus and mastodon are found in the Flaxville Formation.”- Roosevelt County Long Range Plan USDA NRCS Culbertson Field Office
